An Operating System (AKA OS) is the basic software that a device runs on. It is created in order to use the hardware installed on the device it runs. All other application programs use the installed operating system to run, without it, they could not run either. Google has created the Android operating system, which is what runs on most phones. They have also created the operating system for Chromebooks, which are computers. All computer hardware that exists requires an operating system, although most do not have a user interface like computers, phones, and tablets have.
