Google chat is Google's new instant messaging service. Gmail accounts will include chat features in an attempt to merge email and instant messaging. The new chat features are being rolled out in stages. Google chat does not yet work in in https:// or with interfaces other than US-English interface, so not all users will see the features as of February 2006.

The text of the chats become (optionally) searchable as part of the Gmail search interface. Unlike Google Talk, users will not need to download any software.
Gmail shows a Quick Contacts box. A chat session can be started by clicking one your contacts. Like other IM systems, markers will show which of your contacts is online. The chat session itself can take place within the Gmail page, or you can "pop-out" the chat to its own window.
Users have to option to go "off the record", meaning the chat will not be automatically logged in the Gmail account of the person they are chatting to.
Ads will be shown on the archived chat (as with Gmail), but not in the chat sessions themselves.
Google has launched video chatting, available with the download of a plugin.
